NGO Connect
Role:
UX Designer
Responsibilities:
-
User Research
-
Wireframing
-
Prototyping
-
Usability Testing
Design Challenge:
Design a user experience for social good.
The problem:
There are a lot of people who are willing to donate for social good, but it’s difficult to find legitimate NGOs with an actual impact.
Project Goal:
Create a platform to connect users with legitimate NGOs and make the donation process easy.
Audience:
This app has been made with people who donate regularly in mind
User Research:
I interviewed friends and family for this project because the goal of the project is to create impact in your locality. I found that most of them donate regularly and the common problem they faced was finding organisations they could trust. They also had other concerns like - having access to the NGO’s past work to maximise their impact, having a way of verifying if the NGO was genuine, etc. Through my research, I concluded that a platform to connect NGOs with potential donors or volunteers would be the best solution.

Initial Designs:
With the pain points identified and the problem defined, the next step in the process was ideation. I always start the design process with paper wireframes, because they're easy to modify and it helps me get a picture of the layout and elements that will be needed in the design.

The challenging part was figuring out what information to prioritize on each screen. I made a decision by listing all the possible information that could be included and narrowing it down to the most relevant ones for each screen based on the user's journey.

Digital wireframes: Menu, Home, NGO Details, Donate, Confirmation and Volunteer
Usability tests:
With the wireframe finalised, I made a digital version and then built a low-fidelity prototype with that. I've received valuable feedback from users during usability testing, so that was the next step.

These are the insights from the tests:
-
Users want to be able to view their past donations on the app.
-
Users want to be able to enter an amount to be donated.
-
Users want to be reminded of events they signed up for.

I modified my designs based on these results.
High-fidelity prototypes:

NGO Details

Search
The final version of the NGO app was built after several iterations on the original design.

Users can:
-
Search for NGOs
-
Make donations
-
Sign up to volunteer
-
Improve their impact by using the "Your stats" section, which is an analysis of their donations.
Things I learned:
I learned that it’s easy to get lost in adding additional features to an app, but it’s important to remain focused on the core issues.
Possible next steps:
-
Leader boards - a ranked list of users based on their donations. This could encourage people to donate more.
-
Spread awareness of the app through social media.
-
Approach NGOs or government organisations for their endorsement.
